Every now and again I come across an incredibly rare watch for the collector and this special order left handed Rolex Oysterdate is just such a piece. It’s not known how many were made but it’s believed to be less than 1,000 as they were a special order for left-handed people. The dial and winding crown are on the left so it can be worn on the right hand and adjusted with the left. This example dates from 1969 and comes with the original Rolex steel bracelet (full size – 13 links) and is in excellent condition. The Rolex Oyster is one of the most recognisable and respected watches ever made. To find a solid silver one (silver is rarer than gold from this period) is rare and to find an octagonal one is simply wonderful. The beautiful, provenance polished solid silver case is in excellent condition with only the most minimal signs of wear (these are often ‘bashed’ on the edges) – the teeth on front screw case and back screw case are in very good condition and only show minimal wear and no sign of incorrect tool use. As few as one in two hundred watches from this age have any paperwork, box or the original bracelet and that’s what makes this Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date so special. This is a beautiful example of the boy-size Rolex Oyster Royal dating from the 1940′s – these were originally designed for boys but are now bought by ladies.The original slightly off white Rolex signed dial has been professionally refinished to the highest possible standard and is just delicious. With the mustard Arabic hour numbers along with the defined outer ‘Railway Line’ minute ring and subsidiary second this dial is simply beautiful. The original steel hands with matching mustard inserts carry the theme through. The solid steel case is in very good condition with only the most minimal signs of wear around the teeth of the caseback – very rarely, the original Rolex coronet and case number are clearly visible on the outside (most of these wore off over the years). The very high grade Rolex signed manual wind movement has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker.To complete this beautiful watch I’ve added a new, high quality black crocodile skin strap with aftermarket steel Rolex buckle. Watches of this quality are extremely rare and highly sought after – if history is any judge they will only increase in value.

As mentioned, it has just been serviced by my watchmaker and, in view of the high-grade Swiss movement, I will include a 3 month guarantee on the movement which is long enough for you to assess the working order. Also, I offer a full refund if you are not entirely happy, as long as the watch is returned within seven days for the UK, twelve days if overseas, in the same condition.

The Case

The provenance polished steel case is in excellent condition, with only the most minor signs of wear on some of the teeth of the outside caseback and a very minor ding just to the right of the case number. The case measures 30mm wide, excluding the Oyster signed screw down winding crown and 35mm, including the lugs. The outside back shows the Rolex coronet and the reference of ’100014 2280 and the inside back is signed ‘Oyster Watch Co Geneva Swiss’ and patent numbers for Switzerland, Great Britain, France, Germany and USA.

The Dial

The original and stunning Rolex signed dial is in excellent condition. The original and perfectly straight steel with mustard insert hour and minute hands along with the striking subsidiary second hand dial and Arabic hour numbers (again, with mustard inserts) this dial is just beautiful – the outer Railway Line minute markers are as defined as the day it was made. It is signed ‘Rolex Oyster Royal’ and ‘Swiss Made’ The lens has been replaced and shows no signs of wear or scratching.

The Movement

The original Rolex signed and high-grade 15 jewel manual wind ‘Precision’ movement is in crisp, very clean condition. The movement has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker and is in excellent working order. It is signed ‘Rolex 15 Rubies’, ‘Fab Suisse’  and ‘Swiss Made’.

The Strap

This watch sits on a new, high quality black crocodile skin strap with steel aftermarket Rolex buckle.

Rolex Box

I am able to supply authentic Rolex boxes if required. They are from the 1970′s/1980′s and if you are interested please mention when bidding. Whilst I supply high quality boxes as part of the price the Rolex boxes do help complete the watch and retail at £125 or £85 if bought with a watch (subject to availability)

The Conclusion

This is a rare and highly collectable vintage watch from one of horology’s most famous names and will, if history is any judge, provide an excellent financial investment as well as a possession to treasure and enjoy. This ‘large size’ solid silver Rolex Oyster ‘Cushion’ from the late 1920′s/early 1930′s is in excellent condition. The screw front and screw back provenance polished case is in excellent condition with only the most minimal signs of wear – some very minor wear to some of the teeth on the screw front/back. The Oyster signed screw down crown is working perfectly (very rarely it has the Swiss ‘+’) and the high grade ‘Rolex’ signed manual wind movement has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker. The original and extremely beautiful Rolex signed crisp white porcelain dial has been professionally refinished to highest possible standard and whilst it retains its ‘age’ the dial is as it was in the 1930′s. The delicious Arabic hour numbers and crisp railway line minute markers are in black and provide a lovely contrast to the dial and gleaming silver case. Very rarely, it has the original Cathedral hands, not only are these beautiful but to find them in this condition is wonderful. To complete this magnificent watch I’ve added a new, high quality, black crocodile skin strap with aftermarket steel Rolex buckle.

My asking price is below the value for a watch of this condition and rarity, particularly with the continual rise in value of vintage watches of this high quality. In view of the high grade Swiss movement, I will include a three month written guarantee on the movement, which is long enough for you to assess the working order. Also, I offer a full refund if you are not entirely happy, as long as the watch is returned within seven days for the UK, twelve days if overseas, in the same condition – I do reserve the right to charge any postage and insurance costs incurred (for non-UK sales this will be a minimum of £55)

The Case

The crisp, provenance polished solid silver screw down case (caseback and front) is in excellent condition with only the smallest signs of wear. The larger than average case measures 32mm wide, excluding the ‘Oyster’ signed winding crown and 36mm, including the lugs. The ‘teeth’ on the screw back are in very good condition but do show some very minor wear. The inside back is signed ‘Rolex 20 World’s Records’, ‘Great Britain Patents’ and ‘Swiss Patents’. It is also appropriately hallmarked for silver and has the case number of ’55300 61′.

The Dial

The original Rolex signed sub-second porcelain dial is just beautiful with Arabic hour numbers and railway line minute markers. Extremely rarely, it has the original steel Cathedral hands that provide a delicious contrast to the dial and gleaming case. With the subsidiary second hand, crisp white dial with no cracks being framed by the fluted top and silver cushion case this is just a wonderful watch. It is signed ‘Rolex Oyster’ and ‘Swiss Made’.

The Movement

The original Rolex signed, high-grade 15 jewel movement is in crisp, very clean condition. The movement has just been fully serviced by my professional watchmaker. It is signed ‘15 Jewels’, ‘Rolex Patent’ and Swiss Made.
